UPIX, a freeware project

UPIX, a freeware project based on Iannis Xenakis' UPIC, consists of 3 core modules running in real-time (see figure below): a graphical interface, a correlation system (mappings) and a synthesis engine. The main challenge of the UPIX project is the design of a central mixer for collaborative music using the macrostructure formalism of UPIC. Discussions focused on new solutions for the 3 core modules of UPIX to reach the following objectives:

  • Allow different types of inputs to define arcs: architect table (historical input device for UPIC), controllers, motion capture sensors and sound samples.
  • Provide a user-friendly graphical interface to visualize, transform and mix UPIX inputs.
  • Use UPIX in real-time for music composition (historical use of UPIC), and live performance.
  • Develop UPIX with appropriate freeware platforms and tools.

Of late I've been making

Of late I've been making music and sound with the Pure Data software. It is, as they describe it, "a real-time graphical programming environment for audio and graphical processing. It was planned as a free, better and more stable Max/fts, which has also been developed by Miller Smith Puckette at IRCAM."

Looks and sounds similar to MAX, but this software is OpenSource (!!!) and runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OSX and IRIX. It seems as if the CompSci community is hyped on PD and thus libraries of externals have been written so that PD patches can work with MAX and MAX patches can work with PD.

I'm having a blast making interesting computer sounds and solving ever-expanding patching problems.

But, Italy...

i use black pismo powerbooks

i use black pismo powerbooks as my main machine. although os x works a little slow on my machines, i'm not goint to switch to Ti-book. Ti-book is like a wall of hospital. i like pismo's design much better. / why does every apple's new computer look like a toilet bowl? i cannot make music with the toilet bowl. and i don't know why these machines are so acceptable to many people.

Away of aways, but always to

Away of aways, but always to stay (my nerves, what). Swamped at worktimeplace, but such is an excuse. And I don't pretend.

Perhaps we should gather to reminisce the blog halcyon days. I suggest this Saturday evening:

John Butcher/Rhodri Davies
Tim Barnes/Sean Meehan
Barnes/Butcher/Davies/Meehan
9/13, Quakebasket, 113 Spring St., 4th floor, $10, 9 PM

I haven't had the pleasure of live music in some time, and this could serve as a welcome return.

(Thom, your posts don't go unnoticed - or unappreciated for that matter. Keep up the Future of Writing, guy. )

This looks somewhat

This looks somewhat interesting. Perhaps we could convene on monday for a viewing?

I'm having too much trouble

I'm having too much trouble trying to download this new Linux distribution (as an ISO file) and burn it to CD so it is a bootable CD-ROM. The question now is whther to order a RedHat clone called PinkTie from Cheapbytes for 12.99 plus shipping, or just suck it up and buy the real thing from a vendor in the city for 39.99.

That maxtor drive looks incredible, Nick, but I'm not sure I'm ready for 160 Gigs yet. And when I am, 7200 rpm might be slooooow. But what a fuckin' deal!

Merlot has already pointed me in some interesting Fibonacci directions. And I believe they consider themselves an "open resource," not neccesarily "open source."

Someone that works for Harmonia Mundi sent me this free of charge:

And it has been blowing (minds). Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, Dennis Charles and Henry Grimes (!). Playing all Thelonious Monk. Free in terms of expressing within Monk's gorgeous writing, but not an ecstatic excess. Really to be beheld.

My antenna was receiving

My antenna was receiving yesterday as I had an inkling to check tlib in the late afternoon. Yet all I found there was an empty image placeholder. Undoubtedly, you, too, Thomas, were looking and updating the site simultaneously.

I'm returning to this semi-failed LinuxBox project of mine to finally create the mp3 server it is yearning to be. I'm downloading the newest distribution of RedHat from www.kernel.org which maintains an historical archive of every distribution of the Linux kernel (RedHat, Debian, &c.) for free download. Though I may just suck it up and buy the RedHat package for 30 or so scrilla in town just to be sure I have accurate files installed.

SoulSeek is being kind in its return of searches lately. mmmm.... filling hard drives.

Oh, and be sure to close yr tags...

Been diggin' a bunch Os

Been diggin' a bunch Os Mutantes of late (thanks to Abbey) as well as the early fuzzed out records of Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil. I'm pretty sure that the Os Mutantes members play on ALL of these records. I can't get enough of those psych guitar sounds placed so strangely in the mixes.

I also picked up Basil Kirchin's Quantum that I wrote about yesterday (similarly surprised at its Kim's 11.99 pricetag). When I put it on at first Abbey asked if it was Bjork. Wild organ washes with strange foreign female singing. But then slowed down insects and birds and the howling of Evan Parker took over. Ummm, wow.

A bit bummed that I missed the Ween album there. I think I may try to see them on friday night if I know what is good for me.
