I’m not even that crazy about the music; I mean, it is fun, but nothing mind-blowing, the guitar solo from 2:50 - 3:05 an admittedly brilliant aside in this otherwise 80s throwback organic-electro funk. But why we’re here is to peer into this red-clad group’s therapy session. Where did Pil and Galia Kollectiv find this cult-ish primal scream/dance workshop? And where do I sign up for the 2009 version? Kerry again, wow, thanks.

Last Saturday I had my retinas, eardrums and fragile mind blown by Caroliner Rainbow, or, as they were known that night, Caroliner Rainbow Odure Curl Occupying the Cake Box. This review of their show from last year still holds true: “Caroliner came on like a day-glo fever dream, the fabrics and colors of their costumes blending into that of their instruments and background. It was a fully immersive experience, something like Chuck E. Cheese on acid, but with better music: long jams that were tribal and percussive but punk in their provocative vibe.” I’ll add to that weird banjo brawling, totally fucked guitar noise, beyond Sun Ra synth madness, perfectly unschooled drum banging and a bassist that kept our collective head nodding along.

Teenage Filmstars’ “Pressure” from their 1993 LP Rocket Charms on Creation. Perfectly weird scrambled pop with enough ‘gazing and backwards, well, everything , to keep it fresh sixteen years later. I’ve had their first three records on major repeat all week. How did I miss this band in its 1990s phase? Thanks to Aquarius Records and ETB for the (almost simultaneous) turn on.
